Schooling in Guatemala, Honduras, Peru
For a better education
MODERN MODELS OF TEACHING
Project: Improving the quality of teacher training
Countries: Honduras, Guatemala, Peru
Commissioned by: German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development
Term: 2005 to 2012
THEN: Increasing numbers of children were attending school in Honduras, Guatemala and Peru, but the quality of teaching in state schools was low, particularly compared with that at private schools, which many families cannot afford. Insufficient teacher training was the main reason for poor public education provision: many teachers lacked the necessary specialist knowledge and pedagogical skills and had no access to the most up-to-date teaching methods.
NOW: More than 3,500 teachers in these three countries have been familiarised with modern models of teaching. They know how to design learning processes and create a culture of dialogue in the classroom. They were taught by the 121 lecturers from in-service teacher training institutions who took part in the programme, almost three quarters of them women. The cornerstone of their training was a one-year placement in Germany, giving them insights into pedagogical research and practice. Around 150,000 school pupils in Honduras, Guatemala and Peru are now benefiting from better teaching.
